The Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 108,315 in 1970 to 264,275 in 2010. That was an increase of 144.0 percent.
The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,834 in 1970 to 26,048 in 2010. That was an increase of 819.1 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 2.6 percent to 9.9 percent.
The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 125.8 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) added the most population in the first two periods, while that shifted to NIM in the most recent period.
The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM was the main source of added population in the two most recent periods.
